[ARCHIVED] Feb 29, 2012 - Fremont moves forward with e-verify

The City of Fremont is preparing information for local businesses about their responsibilities under the city's new e-verify system which takes effect March 5, 2012. Fremont employers will have sixty days to register by the May 4 deadline.

After an executive session of the Fremont City Council Tuesday Feb. 28 , the council voted unanimously to implement the employment provisions of the local immigration ordinance known nationwide as e-verify.

Mayor Scott Getzschman said the recent U.S. District Court ruling provided sufficient support to move forward. "We're on solid ground to move forward as soon as possible," said Getzschman.

City Councilman Todd Hoppe, speaking in support said, "Why wait? Let's get it done. Waiting is an injustice to the people who voted." Hoppe referred to the June 21, 2010 special election when Fremont voters passed the local immigration ordinance with 57% approval.

Estimated costs for the first year of implementation and compliance are $425,000 to $450,000. The city estimate includes hiring full-time employees, training, and purchasing software and computers to execute the compliance requirements in the ordinance.

The council also voted to cross appeal the housing provisions of the local ordinance. The attorney handling the case for the city, Kris Kobach, said the case could be heard within a year by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. Following Kobach's advice, the council decided not to implement the housing provisions of the ordinance until the appeal is decided.
