July 23 - City Council to consider suspending immigration ordinance

In anticipation of a temporary restraining order, the Fremont City Council will consider a resolution suspending implementation and enforcement of the local immigration ordinance passed in a special election June 21, 2010.

Until the Council makes a decision at its next scheduled meeting Tuesday July 27, 2010 at 7pm, informational sessions scheduled for next week to introduce the new requirements have been postponed.

City Council President Scott Getzschman says, "Given the size of our city, we will make a decision based on the best interest of the citizens of Fremont. As we evaluate legal challenges ahead, we need to look at our resources carefully."

The City of Fremont intends to defend the local immigration ordinance. The Council will also explore its options for legal representation and coverages. It could make a decision on legal representation as soon as next Tuesday.

By law the city has until August 12, 2010 to answer the lawsuits filed to block the ordinance.
